Obtaining New Business
To begin I must apologize for neglecting this site. I have been a little swamped and apologize to those of you who have been waiting for a new post. My thoughts today are centered around people. I have recently been attending a number of networking events here in Kansas City and something has struck me as odd. I notice in these events that many people throw their 30 second speech out and pass out some cards but don’t seem to have the right attitude when networking. Often times they will say that networking doesn’t work because they haven’t gotten referrals. I want to talk about networking for a moment because in today’s climate, a referral can make all the difference in obtaining new business.
Bob Young is the facilitator of one of the groups I attend and he made a very simple and very direct point. He said “Networking is not hunting, it is more like farming. You are here to plant seeds and build trust, If you go to a group with your gun out looking for a sale you will repel people and be unsuccessful.”
